lyrics

I heard about this Giant with a garden like you wouldn’t believe,
Trees with leaves as green as the birdsong was sweet,
And all of the children from all of the neighbourhoods,
Would play there after school for as long as they could.

One day the giant returned home, furious at what he saw,
And he chase them all out of the place with his bellowing roar,
Its mine, its mine, its mine, its mine, why can’t you understand?
And he built a wall around the place that could be seen throughout all the land.

Along with the children, so left the summer and spring,
And the gentle summer breeze was replaced by the north wind.
Why is the spring so late in coming, the giant couldn’t help,
But wonder as he sat in his castle by himself.

With hail in the skies and frost upon the ground,
What was once a garden of life there was now none to be found
And the narciss that did show its head, on seeing the children gone,
Withered in an instant to be cherished by no one.

And then one morning as the giant lay upon his bed
He felt the glow of the sun splash upon his head
The sounds of birds and children rang about his ears
And he ran down the stairs floods of glorious tears.

Through a gap in the wall the children had come
And they were dancing around and laughing in the sun
And though the giant was pleased to see they had returned
The sight of him was enough to send them running off scared.

Exept one boy, alone, to small to see
Reaching for the branches of an over-hanging tree
The boy stretched up, the tree bent down
But still the child remained upon the ground
Until the giant, still with wetness in his eye
Picked up the child and raised him to the sky
And the children peeking through the gap in the wall
Knew that they need not be afraid anymore.
