lyrics

As we blew ringlets into the cold outer air
and sat reclined on our hands and stared
out into the night, and the city lights,
and the railroad tracks and the sky,
from the rooftop of the tower block
that our feet dangled from the edge of,
I threw you a half-smile, fetch.
I took another drag of my cigarette.

As we made angels, and got the backs of our trousers soaked,
and thought the wings of these pretty things might float
the furthest reaches, these beautiful creatures,
over sunlit heights and moonlit beaches,
these flitting things would flap their wings,
and on the ground we'd swear and sing,
I threw you a half smile, fetch.
I left before my hair got wet.

As we slipped, and felt the breath of death in our hearts,
and we fell all the way back to the start,
back through birthdays, and holidays
and cubby holes and school plays,
you laughed before you hit the ground
because the joke of time is the very best one around.
I threw you a half smile, fetch.
I took another drag of my cigarette.
